OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY MAY 1st 2018

For this practical evening we are finally bringing to fruition an idea that has been proposed for a while but was never acted upon until now for a number of reasons.

Originally suggested by Colin Jones in 1974, the idea is to make a series of quick joke films in a restaurant setting, akin to the classic “Waiter, there’s a fly in my soup” gag and variations thereof. The format is simple – two people play the diners, a third plays the waiter – thus should be easily achievable with the minimum of fuss.

We will have practice runs to begin with, but hopefully by the end of the evening we will have found a comfortable groove on the production side of thing and will have enough material for a couple of one-off films or maybe a compendium if we are lucky.

There will be an opportunity for members to have a go at a number of key roles that they are either experienced in or maybe have never tried before, the latter ideal for new or less adventurous members. These roles include camera operating, boom and sound recording , clapper, continuity, props, lighting, and of course acting! And if you think you might flubber your lines, we welcome ad-libbing too since our regular meetings always reveals a few budding comedians!

Help will be on hand for the novices and those who are not so confident making this the perfect opportunity to learn on the job as they say whilst having fun. Please let us know by replying below what role you’d like to take on – you don’t have to stick to just one, we want EVERYONE to be involved in this and have a ago at EVERYTHING – and if you fancy an acting role please also bring a change of clothes for the role most suited to you (for example: smart dress for the diners, shirt, bow-tie and waistcoat for the waiter/waitress).

Equipment that will be provided on the night is as follows:

  • Green screen
  • Lights
  • Tripods
  • Cameras
  • Sound recorders

But you are most welcome to bring your own cameras, maybe to shoot some “behind the scenes” footage. We would also like to request that someone takes some still photos of the evening for our records and future promotional materials.

Props in the main will be supplied by the Committee but if you have something of your own you think might enhance the scenario then feel free to bring it along with you, letting us know what you will bring in a reply below. Oh and of course, please have some jokes ready too! Without them we have no films.

The main purpose of this evening, besides the educational value, is to have fun and that happens most when there is a healthy number of willing participants in the group to make this possible. So, we’ll see you all on Tuesday for another fun and hopefully productive practical session at OVFM!

Kent Film Festival 2018

The KFF is one of the longest running interclub competitions dating back to 1974 and returns for its 2018 iteration to be held on September 29th.

OVFM has been a regular contributor to this event and we hope that members will represent us again this year.

To get an entry form, please visit the KFF Website whilst please see our very own Ian Menage for tickets which will be available soon.

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY APRIL 17th 2018 – The AGM!

One of the more important and serious nights on the OVFM calendar, the 2018 AGM is the one night of the year where club members get to air their concerns, ask questions and share their ideas for future programmes, so please don’t let this opportunity pass you by if you have something to say.

Also at the AGM, we elect our Committee. Every year they work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure there are the club keep running, projects are conceived, outings and events are organised and all of the perks and treats you get to enjoy on a regular basis are taken care of.

Every seat on the Committee is temporarily vacated – including the position of Chairman – so anyone can who has been nominated or has decided to stand can find themselves as the newest member. While we appreciate everything they do for us, like anything an injection of fresh blood can make all the difference, which is why this opportunity is there for the taking.

Incumbent chair Jane Oliver has completed her first year as our guiding light and has been at the forefront in encouraging club members to be be more productive. Meanwhile Hugh Darrington, who took over the mantle of Competitions Officer last year, has decided that one year is enough for him so while we thank him for his efforts in that role, we find ourselves once again looking for someone to step up and fulfil this important position within the club.

We are also looking for a full time Press Officer which, like Competitions Officer, doesn’t have to be a Committee role making this open to anyone to fulfil. At the moment it is being handled by various people already with other commitments chipping in here and there, but really it is a role that requires a dedicated focus, so if you think you’d like to take up this position and help get the club notices, events and other stories into the local press, public forums and across social media and the Internet then please make your intention known at this meeting.

Hopefully those who are interested will have put themselves forward to fill these positions or were nominated by others, via the forms sent out with the Viewfinder or available for download on this site

A reminder of the current committee as it stands is as follows:

Chairman – Jane Oliver

Vice Chairman – Sam Brown

Treasurer – David Laker

Secretary – Freddy Beard

Ordinary Members:

Reg Lancaster (Club President)

Annabelle Lancaster

Ian Menage

Andy Watson

Trevor Rogers

Competitions Officer – Hugh Darrington (standing down)

And remember it is not just the Committee who determine the future of the club and the projects that help us stay active creatively and socially – this is YOUR club so YOUR ideas and suggestions are equally valid and welcome. The club needs films to survive and we thrive on having great ideas to make those films, so please have a think about concepts and themes for future project evenings or other club events.

Remember this is about your voice, your views, your club!

Thanks for reading and see you on Tuesday.

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY APRIL 3RD 2018

COLOUR CORRECTION/GRADING

You lucky people as Tommy Trinder used to say. We have a second Workshop evening planned for you this week to help improve your filmmaking skills.

Jim Morton-Robertson returns to the presenter’s podium, joined this time by John Epton for a session concerning an overlooked part of the post-production process for amateur filmmakers, Colour Correction/Grading.

There is a difference between the two and if you aren’t already aware of this then Jim and John will explain to us in detail what they are and how to go about applying it to you films with live demonstrations.  John already has three clips and images sent to him by club members to use in these practical showcases but the offer is still open to anyone else who has a problem clip or images that would like to see improved.

Please use the FILEZILLA service to send your clips to John or bring them with you on the night; if you choose the latter it is preferred to be on USB stick, and we ask that you please let us know by replying below so we have enough to fit your clip, otherwise if we end up with a surfeit of clips some of you will go home disappointed.

Also, ahead of the AGM on the 17th, please ensure to bring in your completed nomination forms for the committee election if you have one.

I’m sure John and Jim will be tickled pink to see plenty of keen and green faces on Tuesday for this session, so don’t leave them feeling blue or red faced by being yellow and staying away, leaving a black mark against your name!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY MARCH 20TH 2018

EDITING

Editing. It’s one of the most important parts of filmmaking as our films won’t have a narrative without it!

It’s also one of the trickiest parts of the filmmaking process-  not to mention time consuming – but its rewards are – plentiful once the film is finished and we share it with others who are able to follow your creative vision on screen instead of looking at a slideshow of disparate images.

Heading this session are chairman/woman/person Jane Oliver and Jim Morton-Robertson who by way of a description for what is in store proffered the following:

“We’re going to examine ‘the edit sequence’ of a well known Alfred Hitchcock film, master of filmmaking, and discuss the language of editing (and as James won the trophy for the best edit this year, we thought he ought to share his secrets with the rest of us so that we may have a chance to take the award from him next year.)”

Club members are also asked to please have their nomination forms for the club committee completed ahead of the AGM next month.

And that is what we have to look forward this Tuesday evening! See you then!

In Memoriam: Basil Doody

Basil Doody (FACI) 1930 – 2018

Basil joined the club (Orpington cine society) in 1966 and we soon worked together on a Film in an evening which resulted in a film about a joker (myself) who persuaded Basil to stare through a pair of binoculars which had soot smeared on the eye pieces.  And while he was staring, I cut off his tie!

Not a promising start to a friendship which has lasted for over fifty years!

During the filming of the many scenes of Jumble Sale in 1972 it was evident that Basil was a very useful actor and he did not mind the embarrassment of carrying a skimpily dressed mannequin through the streets of Petts Wood.

I had to seek his advice for many of the scenes – he knew about things called cutaways and jump cuts!

There is one scene in that film in which the mannequin wearing a miniskirt is propped against the pillar box while Basil lights his pipe.  While he is distracted the mannequin slips and falls and is replaced by a young woman identically dressed who walks up and leans on the pillar box to read the notice.

Having finished his pipe Basil was expected to pick up the mannequin/lady and hoist her upside-down under his arm.  Being a gentleman he only put his arm around her.

Later the young lady told me that she had worn two pairs of knickers especially for that scene and was rather disappointed!  So was I!

In 1973, the year after Jumble Sale the club decided to make an ambitious film of an Air Race starting and finishing at Biggin Hill.  Basil was given the task of producing it.  It included some footage taken from one of the aircraft, shots taken by OCS club members in various parts of the South East including the South coast.  I looked after the sound having to synchronise aircraft noises recorded by one of those new-fangled cassette tape recorders.

It is a good film considering the limitations we had at that time and is in the archives.

As a long term film maker, Basil’s library is not large but he made some prize-winners.  One significant one was of his National Service and another was on Evacuation.

To his credit, having had a sparse education which was interrupted by the evacuation he became very knowledgeable on plumbing and he told me that on one occasion he was called in to advise on some plumbing problem inside Buckingham Palace.

Eventually he became a non-executive director of a wholesale plumbing company, and when that was taken over he landed a full time job in Scotland Yard, which was the job that he enjoyed the most until he retired.

When his first marriage broke up we invited him on some of our family outings including a couple of summer holidays.  Later when I was widowed, very much too early, he was a great support to me.

I am proud that I was the one who introduced him to Margaret which resulted in a much deserved happy marriage for both of them and a happy extended family for Basil.

It was after his second marriage that I made a series of one minute films which illustrated Basil’s versatility as an amateur actor.  First it was an uncouth man being taught golf by the vicar, then an irate husband who catches his wife with the milkman, later he was towing the club trolley up a steep hill with a so-called mobile phone on it, later he was a refined doctor and very finally a very uncultured gardener showing a refined lady around our garden.  These are films I will treasure.

Gillian, Basil’s daughter became a doctor and now as a high flyer, Dean of Medical Education / Professor in General Adult Psychiatry and Medical Education in Nottingham.

In turn Basil’s contribution to the amateur film movement was recognised by the award of the Fellowship of the IAC (FACI).  He was chairman of our club for one year but did not enjoy it and did not stand for office again.

I shall miss Basil very much and so will those who knew him, especially his wife Margaret and the whole family,

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY MARCH 6th 2018

Ladles and Jellyspoons

It’s award season for OVFM which means the 2018 Oscars!

Every year we celebrate and reward the efforts of our club members with a small trinket or two, with club awards voted for by their peers and the Annual competition categories judged by an external panel.

This year we are indebted to Pip and Rita Hayes and their son Allen of Shooters Hill for giving up their time on our behalf to review and rate our films.

As you should all be aware by now, this is a black tie affair, or as smart as you can be (i.e. no trainers, jeans, t-shirts etc) so the more glam you look the better –  if I’m making an effort (this is the only time a year I wear a shirt) then you can too! If you are feeling adventurous you can come in fancy dress to add a little levity to the proceedings but this isn’t mandatory. And your partners are very welcome to join us too if you have one. If you don’t, perhaps you can borrow someone else’s for the evening?

We have many awards being contested.

In the Annual Competition they are:
