In Memoriam – Mike Turner

Mike Turner, FACI 1937-2012

Mike Turner, FACI who died on 24th Sept. after a short illness, joined Orpington Video and Film Makers (OVFM) in 1992, becoming Chairman in 1997, a seat he held for the next 13 years. He was currently Vice Chairman.

Surrey born, Mike was evacuated to Wales in WWII. After National Service in the RAF he became an underwriter with Commercial Union. Once retired, he ran the shop at a local golf course. Always a keen footballer, cricketer, and a film fan. Mike loved Chelsea, Surrey and Doris Day.

In 1980 he was a founder member of the Orpington and Chislehurst Centre of the National Trust, filling various roles and was currently Vice President. His wife Sue is their Archivist. As leader of their fund-raising team, an early project involved Ightam Mote, the medieval moated manor house.

At OVFM, Mike’s first filming success was Charles Henry Robinson about the American who came across Ightam when cycling around Kent in the 30’s. He so loved the house, that he bought it in 1953 and donated it to the Nation in 1985.

Mike was a crucial factor in OVFM’s recent development. Though most hobby organisations are struggling to halt falling numbers, the club’s membership has almost doubled in the last decade, thanks partly to the Turner effect.

He loved people, never forgot a name, one of those rare individuals who brightens a room as they step through the door. His warmth, sense of fun and enthusiasm made everyone feel better when he was around. Visitors often remarked on the friendly atmosphere in our club-room. He was a popular MC, always well prepared, keeping an audience in a good mood.

He was always busy yet, when he undertook a new project, he could summon extra energy to make positive things happen. In 2008 he felt our Golden Jubilee should be celebrated in style, and set about organising for 35 members to fly over to attend the Guernsey Lily Festival, to visit the Odeon Leicester Sq., planning two Film Shows that raised £2,100 for local charities, and even unearthed our Founder in Spain to attend the Jubilee Dinner.

When the Kent Festival was in danger of failing, it was typical for Mike to chair the rescue group who saved it and was always 100% involved in its renewed success.

100%, that was the Mike Turner way. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts go out to Sue in her loss.

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday September 25th 2012

Okay folks, we have arrived at Round 4 of the Top Ten competition. With such an event filled summer with the Olympics, Paralympics and the traditional season for holidays abroad, the past few months should have been a fertile source of inspiration for all of you to make a film or two.

With that said, here are the members selected to provide a film for this session:

Brian Pfeiffer

Mike Shaw

Craig Robinson

Ann & John Epton

John Ransley

John Alford

Tony Faller

Pat Palmer

Anna Littler

Ann Perrin & Alan Gage

Please reply to this post if you will be providing a film at this week’s session.

If you don’t then have a film ready please let Brenda Wheatley know so that she can try to find someone else to fill the gap in the evening. If your film is ready early please feel free to bring it along to any top ten night and if there is time we will show it.

If you miss your given round you can bring your film along to a later one, but it will only be shown after those drawn for that round, if there is time.

Good luck to everyone who enters a film!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday September 11th 2012

GUEST SPEAKER

BILL DUDMAN

This coming Tuesday sees a guest speaker paying a visit to OVFM – Bill Dudman!!

Bill is an acquaintance of John and Ann Epton but don’t let that put you off from attending this session! Bill is a cameraman and Director of Photography of BBC Ealing Studios with an extensive CV of many television titles familiar to us all, including Black Adder, A Bit Of Fry & Laurie, Keeping Up Appearances, The Two Ronnies, Doctor Who and many more.

Since retiring from the business in 1997 and again in 1999, 2001 and just last week, Bill has been busy rearing homing butterflies as well as running a successful mobile funeral service and dipping his toes into children’s literature, with such best selling titles as Simon And The Smelly Sock, The Tiger, The Wizard and The Airing Cupboard and Forging Your Parent’s Signatures for Beginners.

Bill will no doubt have many great tales and anecdotes from his storied career to share with us as well as helpful tips and advice so this is a session you won’t want to miss.

OVFM 2012 Ramble Sunday August 19th

The Ramble

Sunday 19th August

10 for 10.30am

Otford Village car park (by Otford Village Hall) – http:www.otford.info/ovmh/location_map.shtml

This is a flat and gentle walk to Shoreham Village (and back) with just one or two stiles to clamber over.

Keep your eyes peeled for Otford’s very own scale representation of our Solar System (you’ve got to see it to believe it!) and numerous other sights you wont want to miss.

Arrive at Shoreham lunch time. There are several pubs serving great food, a cafe up by the railway station for light bites and refreshments are also available at the fascinating Battle of Britain Museum.

If you want a challenge why not climb the hill for a close-up view of the chalk cross, which is also a good way to work up an appetite for cream teas and homemade cakes in Shoreham Parish Church (from mid afternoon). If you don’t want a challenge sit beside the River and watch the ducks or explore the lovely village of Shoreham. After everyone has had their fill of tasty goodies we’ll gather at the Church and wend our way back to Otford.

If you can’t manage the walk or don’t want to exert yourself why not join us at Shoreham for lunch or afternoon tea?

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday August 14th 2012

Kicking off the month of August for OVFM is another project evening, this time “Up My Street”, the details of which can be found HERE

Project evenings are often the most fun to see how a certain theme or concept is interpreted by our filmmakers and often produces an evening of great variety and creativity.

I’m sure many of you have found inspiration or something of fascination to share with us based around this ambiguous but hopefully fertile concept and as always we look forward to seeing the fruits of your labours. If you will be bringing a film please reply to this post below to let us know as it is a great help to our resident projectionist Simon “Snapper” Earwicker to have an idea of how to best allot the time.

See you all on Tuesday!

New OVFM Project – “Up My Street”

Time for another club project: Up My Street!

This was suggested by John & Ann Epton at the AGM and it’s ambiguous title apparently serves the purpose of allowing us to interpret it in any way we see fit. It could mean a look up the street where you live or it could refer to the colloquial phrase referring to something which suits your tastes as in “that’s right up my street!”

So get your thinking caps on and your cameras out as the results are due to be screened at the next club meeting in two weeks time on August 14th!

Good luck!

NvS – Sacrificial Wolf – The Shoot!

Filming got under way this past weekend for Sacrificial Wolf the first of Craig Robinson’s two films for OVFM’s entries to the 2012 North vs South competition.

Craig took the role of director and cameraman while sound was handled by Chris Coulson, Sylvia Snipp and Tony Relph (my chauffeur and father), Bob Wyeth handled continuity and yours truly did the clapping! Andy Watson was also on hand, taking some “behind the scenes” footage and pictures whilst helping out when needed. There were just two cast members, Vanessa Chapman as Stephanie and her unwitting partner Neil Aplin who thought he was just taking his missus out for a drive and ended up playing the contact.

Shooting took place at Jeskyns Forestry Park which is tucked away down Gravesend way, a vast expanse of fields, trees and dusty pathways favoured by dog walkers, many of whom would stop and stare at us at work while their dogs would sneak under the gate of the “No Dogs Allowed” compound we were shooting in!

It was a productive day and we seemed to get quite a lot done despite the distraction and the changing weather. Craig has provided these screencaps from his editor to give us an idea of the fruits of us labours (click on image for larger sized version):

You can tell that they’re a couple. That disdainful look has been well practiced…

Vanessa is worried at how close the clapperboard is to her face….

Neil balks at the idea of another take….

And here are a few pictures courtesy of “Raw” Bob Wyeth, including the four leaf clover he found (and subsequently trod on!):

It’s mineral water. Honest!

Chris isn’t happy with the answer to his question “Which side of the fence are you on?”

Craig finds the guide handle on the tripod makes for a handy chin rest.

Apparently it takes three people to hold a boom pole…

Chris is amused by Vanessa’s uninspired Hide & Seek skills…

Lee queries if the nudity in the script is artistically justified…

Chris finally reveals his Arab roots…

Can you see the four leaf clover?

Oh, it was actually a small green butterfly…

Professor Snipp is about plug into robot Andy to find out why he broke down…

Chris is trying to ignore the fact he said he would take over on boom…

Take a good look at this car because it a little while it will go boom!!

It’s not Hollywood but it’ll do…

More pictures to come so please check back soon!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday July 31st 2012

As the more astute of you may have already divined, this week’s club meeting will feature a show of films from another club. For more on this I hand the floor over to Simon “Snapper” Earwicker:

Potters Bar Film Makers – The Video Club for East Herts, have sent us two discs of their most scintillating cinematic creations.

With over seventy minutes of material to draw from on a wide variety of subjects you will have to wait until Tuesday to discover if a dose of Dolly Parton, a taste of Twilight Zone, a figment of Fly or perhaps a blush of Belly Dancer makes it onto the Big Screen!

Or maybe a Touch of Time Travel and Vestige of Vertical Travel will make the grade…only one man knows…and he’s taken the Projectionists’ Oath

“I (insert name here) do solemnly swear never to swear (even when provoked), and I (insert name here) also swear that the truths I hold dear are the whole truths and nothing but the truths so help me Reg (PLEASE help me Reg).”

Got that? Good! Then we’ll see you on Tuesday!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday July 17th 2012

It’s Top Ten Time again folks!! Hopefully you’ve all recovered from the wanton debauchery of the Garden Party at Colin and Mrs. Colin’s domicile on the 3rd so now it’s back to the business of making films!

Peter Mitchell

Mo & Peter Lodge

Annabelle Lancaster

Val Pinkerton

Charlie & Nellie Caseley
