OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY OCTOBER 8TH

NON-VERBAL

We appreciate the fact that we announced this project just last month (don’t look at me, I don’t make the programme) which hasn’t given you much time for everyone to get your creative juices going or your films made but hopefully some of you have been inspired to put something together for this theme of “Non-Verbal”, or have something lurking in your archives that would fit the bill

In the announcement post, I linked to a silent film I made a few years back. I actually filmed and edited the whole thing inside 6 hours, with half the usual filming problems eradicated as there was no dialogue to record! So if I can do it, you can too.

As usual we ask a little cooperation from everyone bringing a film to the meeting to PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, media format (DVD, Blu-ray, USB/Memory stick), file format if using the latter (MP4 is preferred, 1080p maximum) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so if you could do us this courtesy it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing your films on Tuesday!

  1. Yes I’ve got a film called ‘Dreaming’ that I have made for the occasion. It’s 59 seconds long. I’ll bring it on a memory stick, MP4 and 1080p, 16.9 ratio.

    1. Thanks Mandy!

If there is a shortage of entries, I shall bring my edit from a couple of years back of the Ben Turpin silent film project. My version was entitled “One Shot” on DVD 16:9 – 4 mins 55 secs.

  2. I’ll be bringing a short piece (60 seconds), on USB. Called “TV Together”.

MP4, 1080p (16:9) encoded using H.264. Filmed using mobile phone, edited using Davinci Resolve (including colour correction).

  3. For tonight, ‘The Goonies Emotional Outbursts’ 16:9, under 3 minutes, MP4 on memory stick.

  4. Hello, I just found your web site as I’m looking for someone who might be interested in my screenplay. I’ve only just started screen writing and I’ve adapted one of my short stories. I eventually want to adapt my novel into a screenplay.

I’m just wondering if this is something someone from your group would be interested in, just the short story for now.

  5. Andy, why not pop along this evening if you are about. Our theme this evening is ‘non verbal communication’. We will show a few films that could fit this title in some way. We have a couple of new members bringing their films along to show.

I am sure there will be time for you to ‘take the floor’ to tell us more about your screenplay. You can gauge the response and decide whether you think we could assist in some way. We are lacking good story writers at the moment, so you may find your talents could be used to our mutual benefit.

We meet alternative Tuesdays 8pm to 10pm in the Barnard Room at St Augustine’s Church, Southborough Lane, Petts Wood, BR2 8AT. If you can’t make that date, take a look at our calendar to see when you might be able to come along. We are a friendly bunch and you would be most welcome.

  6. OK Thanks Jane. I can’t make it tonight but I will definitely try and get up another time. It would be good if we could collaborate in some way. I’ve always been interested in film making but never really done anything about it so this might be a good time to give it a go.

    Thanks again Jane

    1. Thanks Andy, sorry you can’t make tonight. We learn a lot from each other and often make films together. We also have practical hands on evenings when we can try things out. We are all at different stages, some beginners, others well accomplished and many in between these two,, so you won’t feel out of place.

By the way our Autumn show is coming up in a few weeks time. Friday evening, 25th October 7pm for 7.30pm. People come just as they are; most don’t dress up. We hold it in the Methodist Church at Orpington BR6 9JH, just up from the war memorial, because they have a giant screen and plenty of seating capacity. This will give you good idea of what we get up to and the end results. You can order tickets online.

      Hope to meet you soon.

      Jane

  7. The theme of Non-Verbal one again saw a variety of interpretations from members, including two of our newcomers.

Up first were two films from the archive of Jim Morton-Robertson, “Jetski” and “Barrier Reef”, which was followed by an entry from another member of the Kemsing Mafia, Barbra Darby, whose cat had a “Busy Day”.

Recent joinee Mandy Carr introduced her dog to us whilst he was “Dreaming” then an oldie from me (in the truest sense) in the form of “One Shot”, my edit from the jumbled footage taken from a 1923 silent comedy short.

Our other fresh blood David Roman-Halliday and his good lady wife were watching “TV Together”, before we closed with “Goonie Emotional Outbursts” from Jane Oliver (Who else?).

The remainder of the evening was dedicated to films from the archive, though we did also have another film from David R-H, “Talk To Myself”, as well as the sound version of Jane’s film which helped it make a little more sense. Apparently…
