2016 Triangle Competition

triangle_16

Another annual inter-club competition is upon us, this time it is the Triangle Competition in which three of four clubs – OVFM, Spring Park, Shooters Hill and Epsom – enter films in a three-way contest to be judged by the fourth, with the judging role alternating each year.

This year’s event take place on  Thursday, March 17th  and the judging will be handled by Spring Park Film Makers thus will be held on their turf at Emmanuel Church, West Wickham BR4 9JS at 8 pm (doors usually open 7.30 – 7.45).

OVFM has done well in the past in this competition so let’s see if we can add another win to our score card. For more information or if you want tickets in order to represent OVFM in person on the night please get in touch with our esteemed secretary Freddy Beard.

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY MARCH 15th 2016

If you’re blue

And you don’t know where to go to

There’s always OVFM’s one night of glitz

Puttin’ on the Ritz

I must confess I’ve never put on a Ritz, I wouldn’t actually know where to start – I couldn’t find any instructions on the Internet (at least not on sites which haven’t been blocked by my ISP) – but I do know that we will be putting on the 2016 OVFM Oscars!

This is the one night of the year where we ditch our jeans and t-shirts and dig our best clobber out from the back of the mothball ridden wardrobe for its annual airing as we celebrate the hard work of club members by handing out bits of old scrap metal in recognition of their creative genius.

Of course the smart dress code is optional but if you do come in regular attire expect to be jeered, teased and have rotten vegetables thrown at you when we force you to sit outside in the car park for being a Kiljoy.

Last year saw Professor Mike Shaw crowned the big winner walking away with four awards and a sprained wrist. Will Mike reign supreme again this year or will someone else take all the glory?

As ever among the main prizes being contested are:

Ian Dunbar Cup

Orpington Trophy

Jubilee Shield

Vincent Pons Trophy

Mike Turner Plate

Kath Jones Cup

Bette Davis Eyes

Along with some new categories added by the Legion Of Doom which include:

Tallest Club Member

Best Club Member Over 30 But Under 50

Best Beard (natural hair colour only)

Outstanding Contribution To Putting Out Chairs

This year we are indebted to Kevin Doyle, secretary of AVS Movie Makers in Altrincham, for judging the entries and for his comments on said films, which he described as “very good”. Apparently “bloody brilliant” is not in his vocabulary so I guess we have to take what we can get but we do thank Kevin for giving up his time for us.

Aside from dressing up our stalwart refreshments commander Peggy “One Lump Or Two?” Parmenter will have some extra treats to compliment the teas and coffees to mark this special occasion – and when I say “will have” I obviously mean “Peggy didn’t give it a single thought before I brought it up”. You can thank me later.

Don’t forget that plus 1s are welcome (or in my case minus 1) while plus fours are prohibited as this isn’t a golf club. A 3-Iron is a golf club and is also the title of a film by South Korean auteur Kim Ki-Duk who also made a film called Time which I am now going to call on this post.

The Oscars is the most prestigious and fun filled evening of the year in the OVFM calendar so we do hope you can make the effort to join us at our regular meeting venue, the Barnard Room in St Augustine’s Church this coming Tuesday March 15th for this special annual event.

I can’t believe it is 2016 already!

2015 has flown by in general but the year for OVFM seems to have gone even quicker! Where does the time go? It was barely nine months ago we kick off the annual Top Ten competition and now the final is here!

With the five individual rounds having been contested the top highest scoring films will be shown again on this night, with some having undergone a few changes as per the feedback given following the original screenings. The films will be judged and scored again and the winner and runner up will be revealed and subsequently rewarded at the Oscars in March.

Now, lest my maths is to fail me as usual the Top Ten finalists should be as follows:

“Commute” by Barbara Walker

“A Day In The Life Of Kieran Jones” by Lee Relph

“Table Top Whimsy” by John Bunce

“30 Years of Caring” by John & Ann Epton

“Lie Back” by Mike Shaw

“Leaf Cutter Ants” by David Laker

“Yellowstone” by Brian Pfeiffer

“Broken” by Bob Vine

“Central Park New York” by Jim Morton Robertson

“Our Memorable Trip To London” by Barbara Darby

Our competitions officer Brenda Wheatley should have been in touch with all the finalists by now notifying them that their films are required for this evening, so please bring them along if you are among that number or if you cannot make it, please contact Brenda to let her know, or if possible perhaps speak to a fellow club member or any member of the Committee to arrange for your film to be brought in by someone else.

This meeting is also the final deadline for the Annual Competition so if you haven’t done so, please download a form HERE and bring it along with your film(s) and entry fee, while hopefully by now you will all have also given Peggy your money and orders for the Annual Dinner.

Good luck to all the Top Ten finalists and we hope to see you all on Tuesday night!

You better watch out

You better not cry

Better not pout

I’m telling you why

OVFM’s Christmas Social is here!

The festive season is very much in full swing and it wouldn’t be complete without our annual Christmas social. Or it might be, depending on what’s on telly this year.

As usual we move from the Barnyard Rooms to the larger Garden Rooms for this event which will see the now traditional quizzes (so don’t forget your pen and paper), including my awesome Film Picture Quiz, and other fun events devised and arranged the our committee the Legion Of Doom.

And of course Peggy and her elves will have another luxurious buffet spread for us to stare at longingly during the games then when it is feast time we find ourselves at the end of the line and end up watching everyone else load up their plates and leave nothing of what we actually like.

Unfortunately it looks unlikely that Cherie will be there to lead us in the traditional sing-a-long although we did have an offer from Justin Bieber to deputise but we told him to **** off!

Since the rules are relaxed you are welcome to wear something festive and fun if you so wish, or you can not bother at all. While the focus will be on fun (allegedly) we do ask that if you have a film for the Annual Competition then please submit it to Brenda along with your £2 fee and entry form. Also any footage for the Newsreel would also be appreciated and this meeting is also the closing date for Annual Dinner forms as well.

Not much else to say except see you there and if you can’t make it then Merry Christmas to you! 🙂

It’s competition time again when we invite you to submit films for a chance to win one – or all three – of our long standing trophies: The Kath Jones Cup, Mike Turner Plate and Vic Treen trophy.

As you know the respective requirements for these contests are:

A joke film no longer than 5 minutes,

Any type of film which is a maximum of 60 seconds

A film cut to music.

For a full detailed explanation of the rules and requirements please go HERE

Remember you can enter a film for all three competitions, the results of which will be revealed at the Oscars next March. If you are bringing a film or films, please reply to the post below with the details (format, picture ratio, run time) which is a great help in planning the evening time wise. You don’t want us to run out of time and not be able to show your film

Good luck to everyone submitting a film.

This week’s club meeting is the fifth and final qualifying round of the annual Top Ten Competition. For the results of the first four rounds please click HERE.

Last time we rebounded from the single entry of round three with five entries, a record for this year’s competition. It appears to be an  unofficial tradition that members leave their filmmaking until late in the year, so perhaps this will manifest itself with a huge response to this closing round?

The names drawn to submit an entry for this round are:

Bob Wyeth

Alan Smith

John & Sylvia Greengrass

Annabelle Lancaster

Mike Shaw

Bob Vine

Brian Pfeiffer

Hugh Darrington

Peggy Parmenter

As ever if you can’t make your designated round be sure to let Brenda know ahead of time or you have a film ready early, please bring it along as chances are it will be welcomed for screening time permitting.

And if you are bringing a film this week then PLEASE reply to this post in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, format (DVD, Blu-ray, Mini DV) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so if you could do us this courtesy it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and good luck to everyone who enters a film!

This week’s club meeting is the fourth round of the annual Top Ten Competition. For the results of the first three rounds please click HERE.

I realise that before the last round we expounded upon the belief of “quality over quantity” but as we only had ONE entry that is, I’m sure you’ll agree, pushing it a bit. Hopefully we will see an improvement on that number as we enter into the latter stage of the contest and with the summer holidays behind us, you good folk have had some time to put your footage together into a some sort of visual narrative.

The names drawn to submit and entry for this round are:

Barbara Darby

Mike Bishop

David Laker

Leo Staggs

Anna Littler

Walter McKenna

Tony Keable

Chris Coulson

Barbara Walker

As ever if you can’t make your designated round be sure to let Brenda know ahead of time or you have a film ready early, please bring it along as chances are it will be welcomed for screening time permitting.

This week’s club meeting is the third round of the annual Top Ten Competition. For the results of the first two rounds please click HERE.

We’ve had a total of eight films thus far across the first two rounds so once again the challenge is to top that total, although we do understand the maxim of “quality over quantity”. Will we see it happen with the contributions from the following club member who have been selected for this round?

Andy & Marian Watson

John Alford

Malcolm Goodwin

Charlie & Nellie Caseley

Richard & Jess Pugh

Mike & Jo Coad

Pat Palmer

Kent Film Festival 2015

KFF2

KENT FILM FESTIVAL 2015

The annual Kent Film Festival will soon be upon us, taking place on Saturday 26th September 2015 at Canterbury Christ Church University, with doors opening at 10:30am.

OVFM has had a far amount of success at the KFF over the years, our last big win occurring in 2013 while we had a good showing last year, so as ever, this is a great opportunity to not only support OVFM on the day but to maybe also if you’ve entered a film, you could be contributing directly to whatever success we may achieve.

Tickets are on sale from Ian Menage (you know where to find his contact details) – £5.00 for advance bookings/ £7.50 on the door (£3 for students) – while all additional info you need, such as directions to the venue etc. can be found on the KFF website HERE.

Good luck to all who have entered a film on behalf of OVFM.
