OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY JANUARY 25th 2022

SIGNS

Coming up in the next club meeting on January 25th we have the screening of the films you made to the theme of Signs as first revealed to you HERE.

Hopefully you’ve taken advantage of the nebulous scope this rubric has as we explained but if you still need to add some finishing touches or need some last minute inspiration then be sure to check out the “Resources” links on the front page of this site where you will find links to site which have FREE stock images and videos clips for you to use; our chair Jane Oliver also submitted to other links for  FREE images to sites I’ve used a lot for my Photoshop manipulation compositions Pixabay and Pexels.

The meeting will be held via Zoom per the current situation with Omicron, the links for which will be sent out by Barbara J. Darby a couple of day before it takes place with a reminder on the day.

Now the important part – if/when you have your film ready please ensure it is in MP4 format only and send it to DAVID LAKER either via WETRANSFER or FILEZILLA by no later than FRIDAY 21st JANUARY !!

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing your films on the 25th!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY February 18th

RUBBISH

It is time to see what you have to share with us regarding our first Film to a Theme project for 2020. I’m sure interest was piqued when we announced this project two months ago, and you have all been busy making something relevant to the theme of Rubbish – maybe you even deliberately made a bad film to suit the rubric (not that anyone in OVFM would make a bad film, of course).

As usual we ask a little cooperation from everyone bringing a film to the meeting to PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, media format (DVD, Blu-ray, USB/Memory stick), file format if using the latter (MP4 is preferred, 1080p maximum) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so if you could do us this courtesy it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing your films on Tuesday!

FILM TO A THEME PROJECT – NOTICE

RUBBISH

We kick off 2020 with our first Film to a Theme project and one we think you can have some fun with.

Rubbish might conjure up what we throw away on a daily basis that ends up stinking the house out and being a eyesore on the landscape. But this is just one interpretation of this rubric – we could ask what happens to the rubbish after we throw it out. Maybe if you have environmental concerns on the impact of how our waste is handled this is something you could discuss in your film.

Most rubbish these days can to be recycled but who does this job? How about a film saluting the unsung heroes who get up in the wee hours to wake us up when they collect our rubbish very week and their colleagues at the rubbish tips who are prepared to get down and dirty to sort everything out and make sure it goes to the right places. Perhaps you have an insight to the whole recycling process you could document.

Ever been to a scrap yard for sundry metals or cars? Share it with us. Is fly tipping ruining your neighbourhood? Share us your rant or make a comedy out of it.  You know the saying “One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure” (not gender exclusive btw)? There’s an idea for a short film too. People talk a load of rubbish too, how about exposing them for a laugh?

These are just some suggestions but no doubt you can come up with many more of your own and come up with something to share with us on the screening evening set for the club meeting on Tuesday February 18th 2020, giving you plenty of time to work your magic.

Good luck and thanks for reading.

FILM TO A THEME PROJECT – NOTICE

NON VERBAL

Sorry to break the peace and quiet but since our last Film To A Theme Project the committee have decided to throw another one our way. This time the theme is Non Verbal.

In case this sounds like a daunting topic, remember cinema had existed for nearly 30 years before sound was added to moving images – and they do say a picture is worth a thousand words! Creating a narrative without dialogue might sound difficult but with a little bit of imagination it is a lot easier than it might appear, as I found out when I made a silent film with my nephew a few years back.

Yet, it doesn’t have to be a traditional silent film, it can be anything with a strong and recognisable narrative – maybe a montage of connected images, or a mime act, or even a story told through sign language – the only requirement is that there is no dialogue at all.

There is a lot to think about but unfortunately not too much time a the deadline is the screening evening set for Tuesday October 8th giving you just over a month to put something together.

Good luck and we look forward to seeing your entries on October 8th!

OVFM CLUB MEETING TUESDAY AUGUST 13TH

POEM

The time has arrived to share with us the fruits of your labours as we screen your films made to a poem. We announced this project a couple of months ago so you’ve had plenty of time to retrieve that dusty old book of sonnets from the back of the wardrobe, or look up your favourite limericks to get some inspiration for this project.

As usual we ask a little cooperation from everyone bringing a film to the meeting to PLEASE REPLY TO THIS POST in the comments/reply section below, letting us know the film’s run time, media format (DVD, Blu-ray, USB/Memory stick), file format if using the latter (MP4, MKV, AVI, etc.) and picture ratio (4:3 or 16:9). This is a great help for us when planning the evening out and helping things run smoothly so if you could do us this courtesy it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing your films on Tuesday!

FILM TO A THEME PROJECT – NOTICE

POEM

There’s been a slight break since our last Film To A Theme project to allow for the Top Ten competition and various practical evenings but that doesn’t mean we’ve given up on them.

As you can see, the theme for the next project is Poem.

Everyone likes a good rhyme, whether it is a witty limerick, an emotive haiku or a profound sonnet, and whilst it might not always be so obvious, the lyricism and inventive use of language found in a well written verse lends itself to any number of visual interpretations, which is where YOU come in.

We are asking that you get your cameras out and make a short film set to a poem, like you would with a film set to music but one that illustrates or interprets the text. Whether it is Shakespeare,  Wordsworth, Yeats, Hughes, Plath, Coleridge, Lear or Milligan we are spoiled for choice when it comes to picking the right title to bring to life, so spread your nets wide and let your imaginations run wild, and of course don’t forget you are welcome to hire a voiceover artist or actor friend to read the poem too!

Of course, your films can come in any style – live action, animation, photo slideshow, with or without music, whatever you can come up with will to provide us with an entertaining evening of films, all we ask that you adhere to the FIVE-MINUTE MAXIMUM time limit .

The deadline for this project is the screening date which is set for Tuesday August 13th so you have a bit of time to put something together, and we look forward to see what you have for us then!

NEXT OVFM CLUB MEETING – Tuesday May 21st

FAMILY

We realise it hasn’t been that long since we first announced this Film To A Theme project but the topic is one that not only has universal possibilities but given most people’s first foray into filmmaking is home videos of their families. therefore we are confident there is a wealth of footage in the archives of club members featuring special events, holidays or just general family memories they are happy to share with the rest of us.

Tonight is the night that we get to see what you have for us, whether it is new or old.

NEXT OVFM CLUB MEETING – Tuesday April 23rd

MAKE SENSE OF THIS

Hopefully you’ve all had a chance to download the footage supplied by Sam Brown for this editing project we first announced last month and have been working away in taking these random clips and making a coherent film out of them. Admittedly, they seem like they don’t have any potential at first (Sorry Sam) but once you go through them all, I am sure you will some inspiration from at least one of the clips as a starting, just as I did.

Tonight is the night that we get to see what you have achieved for this project, and if we’ve learned anything about our club members it is that we always give any challenge a go no matter how vague the subject or source material is. We at OVFM pride ourselves in our creativity and we hope to see an example of this on Tuesday night at the screening of the films for this project.

NEXT OVFM CLUB MEETING – Tuesday March 5th

WHY AM I HERE?

Admittedly it wasn’t that long ago when we first announced this Film To A Theme topic but we hope that some of you were inspired  by the nebulous possibilities the title of “Why Am I Here?” conjures up and have been hard at work putting those ideas onto film.

Remember, this is not a competition evening so these films won’t be judged but if you want feedback or constructive criticism, we will happily oblige, time permitting of course.

Just a heads up to warn you not to get too comfortable as we will be announcing our next Film To A Theme project very shortly with the screening date set for April!

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing your latest gems on Tuesday!

FILM TO A THEME – NOTICE

WHY AM I HERE?

A question we have no doubt asked ourselves on numerous occasions, be it at school, work, a concert, a seminar, hospital appointment, or maybe even standing at the altar before a crowded congregation with the vicar an your future spouse waiting for an answer to a very important question!

Perhaps there is a philosophical side to this question pertaining to life and the universe to be explored? What if someone has been abducted and wakes up in a strange location? Or you simply want to extol the virtues of being a member of OVFM, this latest Film to A Theme project gives you the chance to capture your thoughts and ideas on film (well memory cards – or mini DV tape for those of you still stuck in the early 2000’s) and share them with the rest of us.

The deadline and screening date is the club meeting on Tuesday March 5th so get your thinking caps on and let your creative juices flow!
