It’s that time of year when OVFM celebrates the days getting brighter, the weather is getting warmer and the trees and plants are in bloom once again. So what better way is there for a film club to mark this occasion by sharing with everyone the best of the many films made over the past twelve months along with a few gems from the archive. We shall also be taking a look back over the past twelve months in the Orpington/Bromley region through the annual Newsreel.

The 2013 Spring Show will take place on  FRIDAY 22nd March at 7.30 pm

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday January 8th 2013

topten12FIN

Happy New Year everyone!

I hope you’ve all got over the indulgences of the Christmas period and are feeling fit for another fun packed, educational and productive film making year in 2013.

But first we have some unfinished business to take care of in the form of our Top Ten competition and our first club meeting of the year is the Top Ten final. By now, those of you whose films have scored the highest marks in the individual rounds would have received an e-mail from our competition organiser Brenda Wheatley and have made any necessary adjustments and improvements to your films based on the feedback and comments from the previous rounds.

Now it is judgement time and the ten highest scoring films get a second airing for the final ranking, and the results of this round and the winning film will be revealed at this year’s Oscars on March 5th!

Also this meeting is the closing date for  entries for the Annual Competition so please make sure you don’t miss out and get your films, entry forms and entry fee to Brenda.

So good luck to all the finalists and we look forward to seeing all of, you on Tuesday for this important date in our annual calendar!

OVFM Annual Competition 2012

Yes folks it is that time again where you brave filmmakers let your masterworks leave the bubble that is OVFM and have a panel of outsiders view and judge them.

Last year’s competition – the complete list of winners can be found HERE – was won by Cap’n Chris Coulson and his disturbing expose “My Other Hobby” but the main prize winner was Simon “Snapper” Earwicker who took home four awards. Can they do it again this year or will someone else step up to be bathed in glory?

Below you will find links to the entry forms which you can download and print off and bring to the next club meeting which is the Christmas Social on December 18th while the closing date is January 8th 2013.

As always the entrance fee is £2.00 per person but you can enter as many films as you like. All monies are non-refundable as we have to bribe the judges somehow.

To download the Entry form as an MS Word document click  HERE

To download the Entry form as a PDF document click HERE

Good luck to everyone who enters and remember closing date for your entry forms is TUESDAY JANUARY 8th 2013!

The Great OVFM Sound Debate

Hi Everyone,

At the club meeting on 4th December, Jim raised the issue of sound levels being adjusted whilst a film is being shown.

What do you think?

There appears to be widely varying views on this matter amongst the membership of the club. Prior to further discussions on this subject at the next committee meeting in January, it would be useful if as many members as possible were to express their thoughts and/or solutions.

All of your opinions are important so please take the time to reply via the website.

Many thanks.

N vs S Southern Heat Report

North vs South Southern Heat Report

The Southern Heat of the North v South Competition took place on Sunday 25th November at Farnborough Village Hall in Farnborough, Kent.

There were only 11 films entered this year compared to the 29 we had only 2 years ago so it left a big hole in the programme. This was filled with films from Sydney Movie Makers Club in Australia.

We were very pleased to see an entry from Exeter Films, who were first time entrants.

The fact that six of the 11 entries were from clubs considerably distant from Farnborough and as far apart as Devon and Derby meant inevitably that they wouldn’t be represented in person. However, we were delighted that Jill Lampert from Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers, who also had an entry in, could join us for the show. In all, only 55 people attended which is down on last year’s Southern Heat.

Our judges were Mid Wilts Video Society and we are very grateful for their help.

Following the showing of the films, the audience were once again asked to try and match the judge’s decision.

Audience Vote

1st              Operation Black Hat                       Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers

2nd             The Buzz In The Boardroom        Surrey Border Movie Makers

3rd             A Place Of Calm                               Derby Movie Makers

4th             It Pays The Bills                               Nuneaton Moviemakers

5th             Confidential                                     Epsom Movie Makers

Official Result

1st              Disastermind                                   Orpington Video & Film Makers

2nd             Operation Black Hat                     Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers

3rd             Ship Ahoy!                                       Nuneaton Moviemakers

4th             A Place of Calm                               Derby Moviemakers

5th             Confidential                                     Epsom Movie Makers

Needless to say, nobody in the audience matched the judge’s decision but Brenda Wheatley of Orpington Video & Film Makers was closest and took the ‘Audience Vote’ prize.

Congratulations to all the Southern Heat winners.

The Grand Final will be held on Sunday 27th January 2013 when it is hoped the South can win back the John Wright Trophy after 8 years in the wilderness of the North.

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday November 20th 2012

comp_proj

This week’s meeting is another double header as we welcome films for both an annual competition and a club project.

The Mike Turner Plate, named after our late ex-chairman/vice chairman/all round good guy, is open to films with a maximum running time of one minute (or 60 seconds for you metric users) on any subject, style or genre.

The club project is entitled “How?” which came from the esoteric mind of Jim Morton-Robertson. I’m not entirely sure what the exact criteria is for this, whether it is a documentary on a certain creative process or an insight into Native American greetings. I did try to coax some kind of explanation from Jim but all he did was moan in his Scottish accent about a large North American antlered mammal running unfettered in his domicile!

I am also reliably informed that club member Craig Robinson will be aging by one year on Monday the 19th so we should be sure to give him some belated birthday bumps on Tuesday!

We look forward to seeing your films and if you will be bringing one for either or both categories please reply to this post to let us know ahead of time.

Thanks and see you on Tuesday!

NvS – Disastermind – The Shoot!

Disastermind – The Shoot!

Over a three day period in September and October, the filming of OVFM’s winning entry into the 2012 North vs South competition took place at the Garden Rooms, at St Augustines. The film in question was David Laker’s Disastermind.

The following pictures – with the exception of the first one – were taken at the final night of shooting on Wednesday October 17th and come courtesy of Alan “No, you can’t call me Al” Smith:

James Neary (left) as Norman Brown and Sean Chapman (right) as the Question Master.

“Shouldn’t we be sitting facing the screen?”

Hugh: “And I’m missing Corrie for this!”

Simon “Snapper” Earwicker and his “the tables have been turned” smile…

Chris was the first to notice that Big Dave from Shooters Hill had paid an unexpected visit!

Simon: “At least I won’t get snapped again by…Oh bugger!”

Hugh: “8…9…10! Right, Coming ready or not!”

Chris: “This will teach Jane to laugh at my beard!”

Jane: “There seems to be something wrong with my aperture setting”

Hugh: “I said you can play musical chairs AFTER we’ve finished shooting!”

Thanks again to Alan Smith for the photos (and to the mystery supplier of the first one – please speak out if this is you) and to everyone who took part in the shooting of “Disastermind”.

Top Ten Competiton Special Announcement!

Special announcement about the Top Ten Competition!!

Breaking news from the headquarters of the Legion of Doom.

Due to the number of entrants for this year’s Top Ten competition being slightly down in comparison to previous years, it has been decided that club members will be given an extra chance to submit a film with the addition of a bonus round!

The deadline is the club meeting on Tuesday 4th December 2012, so anyone who was unable to submit a film in their allotted round or didn’t get round to making one, this is your chance to rectify this and make your mark on this year’s contest.

A reminder of the members who have not submitted a film this year:

Members are encouraged to make the most of the next four weeks to get their films ready for viewing. With plenty of festive occasions this time of year brings, the scope for providing an interesting document  to share with the rest of the club is wider than usual. Or if you have an unfinished project gathering dust, here’s hoping for a last minute burst of inspiration for you to complete it.

So, please take advantage of this extra opportunity and we look forward to seeing your films on the December 4th.

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday November 6th 2012

ovfmcompcorn

November kicks off with two of OVFM’s longest running competitions taking place: The Vic Treen Trophy and the Kath Jones Cup.

A quick reminder of what is expected for each one:

The Vic Treen Trophy is a film set to music although this means being creative with the timing and editing rather than just slapping a bit of Coldplay or Tinie Tempah over footage of your trip to Chessington Zoo.

The Kath Jones Cup requires a comedy film of no longer than five minutes that has a definitive punchline to it; in other words a short comic sketch if you will.

Attending club members will score the films for both competitions on the night with the winners to be announced at the Oscars next year.

Good luck to all who enter their films this year. Here’s to a potentially fun and rocking evening!!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday October 23rd 2012

And so the final of the initial qualifying rounds of this year’s competition is upon us. We’ve seen some interesting films thus far so hopefully this session wouldn’t disappoint either.

If last year is any indicator, some of you will be leaving it to the last minute before making your film which would suggest a healthy turn out of entries to close this opening stage of the contest.

The remaining club members invited to provide their films are:

Andy & Marian Watson

Jim Morton Robertson

Barbara Walker

Mike Bishop

Andy Webb

Basil Doody

Sylvia Snipp

Ray Hewitt

Derek Allen

Alan Smith

Malcolm Goodwin

Susan Ward

Len Lawrence

Please reply to this post if you will be providing a film for this week’s session.

If you don’t then have a film ready please let Brenda Wheatley but I’m sure that those who missed their spot earlier in the contest will be able to provide ample substitution.

Good luck to everyone who enters a film!
