OVFM Club Meeting September 2nd 2014

nvs14

You may recall that the original plan for this week’s club meeting was to have a guest speaker in Graham Kirkman but unfortunately, due to work commitments Graham had to pull out. So we’ve had to resort to “Plan B” but don’t worry as we have something rather fun line up for you.

Because we have yet to make an official film for this year’s North vs South competition (and I apologise personally for not being able to progress with my film submission) we will be endeavouring to rectify this with something similar to our “Meet the Members” evening a few weeks back.

The idea is simple: we will be exploring the “What if..?” theme and will be asking club members to think of a humorous idea to both ask and answer that question – eg: “What if dogs could fly?” “What if I had two heads?” “What if my hoover could work by itself?”… I’m sure you can come up with better ideas than that which is the main thrust of this evening.

We will set up a camera and green screen and if you could provide some props or costumes apropos to your idea, we will do our best to make these light hearted scenarios into a visual reality.

So please get your thinking caps on and remember the emphasis is on humour so be afraid to abstract or esoteric in your choices – creativity and fun are the key elements in this project (that and winning the N vs S of course! 😉 ). We want to get as many people in front of the camera as possible so don’t be shy in stepping up and joining in.

Hope to see you on Tuesday brimming with ideas! 🙂

MEET THE MEMBERS!

You’re probably thinking  “but we’ve already met!” So what is this all about? Well it’s a long story so I hope you are sitting comfortably.

At a recent committee meeting when we were brainstorming ideas for our club meetings to get everyone interested and involved I suggested a practical evening based on the Radio 4 show “Chain Reaction” . For those of you who have not heard it before, the concept is simple: one week a celeb will interview another celeb then the following week the one being interviewed will now interview a new celeb who will then go on be the interviewer the next week and so on.

The idea I had was similar in that we set up the club equipment (camera, lights, boom, etc.) and have a two person interview set-up then we swap the roles around so everyone gets a go at at least one role on the production side or in front of the camera.

Then – inspired by the recent archive film from 1963 in which the OCS (Orpington Cine Society) club members were being interviewed – our chairman Simon” Snapper” Earwicker thought it would be a great idea if we used this project to make an updated version of this film – hence this week’s special one night club project “Meet the Members”! Simon also thought that we could possibly incorporate this into our official North vs South entry with questions concerning the topic “If”.

Got all that? Good. So please do all show up on Tuesday and be preserved on camera in the OVFM archives for generations to come when they look back to see who was keeping the OVFM name alive in 2014!

Okay folks it’s deadline time! The night has finally arrived where the fruits of your labours are shared with the rest of the club for our latest project evening and our first one for 2014 on the theme of GREEN!

Since we gave you notice about this topic many months ago hopefully you have all been busy in that time, pondering your take on”Green” and translating those thoughts onto film. We all know what a creative and inventive bunch we have among our ranks so I’m sure we can expect a varied and esoteric selection of films! to behold!

If you do have a film then please reply to this post below, letting us know the runtime and format, as this helps with planning out the evening’s activities.

Also, our chairman Simon “Snapper” Earwicker is unable to join us this week so the hosting duties will be undertaken by someone else. Who could possibly fill Simon’s illustrious shoes? A Hollywood star? A major TV presenter? A talking rabbit? None of the Above? You’ll have to come along and find out, won’t you?

See you all on Tuesday!

GREEN!

Hello again and here we are with another exciting club project for you to participate in.

The subject this time is “Green”.  Now what does that mean you ask? Well, it could mean a number of things: something incorporating the colour perhaps; a tribute to your favourite fruit or vegetable; a tour around your garden; a golfing green; maybe something to do with the environment; a film about author Graham Greene, guitar legend Peter Green or TV impresario Hughie Green; perhaps you have done something using a green screen; you might even have a cold and have coughed up something green; aliens are supposed to be green aren’t they? – whatever it is we ask you to get out your cameras, get filming and show it to the club!

The deadline (i.e: the night we’ll be showing the films) is TUESDAY APRIL 29TH so don’t say we don’t give you enough advanced warning on these projects!

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing the fruits of your labours on the 29th of April!

This post is being relayed to you in a low voice apropos to the subject matter so if you have difficulty understanding it, please move closer to your screen or monitor for better results.

READY NOW? THEN WE’LL BEGIN!!

Our next meeting sees the results of our latest project “Silent”, the criteria for which can be found HERE. A challenging remit for sure but one that is open to many interpretations which we are sure you have all keen to explore. Or at least it gave you a chance for some of you to remix some of your old films you were afraid to show because the sound was a bit dodgy!!

We are hoping that there is little “silence” by way of response when we ask if you have a film ready but if you do please reply to this thread in the comments section if you will be participating as it helps with the timing on the night.

Many thanks and hope to see you there!

Hello again!

One of the more popular and fruitful facets of our club calendar is the club project, where we set a theme and see what short films you clever folk can come up with pertaining to that theme.

To kick off 2014 we give you the topic “Silent”.

What does that mean? Do you make a silent film in the tradition of the early days of cinema? Or just a film with no dialogue, just a visual narrative? Perhaps you want to discuss the nature of silence? The answer of course is “All of the Above” so get your thinking caps on and see what inspires you.

The closing date – therefore the club night at which we shall be showing the fruits of your labours – is TUESDAY FEBRUARY 4TH 2014 which gives you just over six weeks to work your magic.

Good luck to all who enter a film and we look forward to seeing what gems you create!

OVFM Advert II

This week’s club meeting is another project evening and a follow-up on one from 2011, where we asked you to create some promo clips that will hopefully encourage and entice new comers to join our humble group. Unlike making a short film for entertainment purposes this is a chance to show off your persuasive skills and selling techniques and OVFM is the product you have to sell to the many amateur filmmakers in the Orpington and surrounding area who have yet to learn about our existence.

And if time is permitting, the results of the two recent Coaching Evening sessions will be screened for our delectation and discussion.

I Wished The Long Hot Night Goodbye…

…And pushed the thick air away like it was a limp, damp blanket heavy on my skin. I downed the last dregs of my drink, there was no ice in the glass, the ice had long since gone south along with the air con and my last clean shirt. Marlowe get off your sorry butt, it’s Tuesday the 16th July and there’s work to be done. I flung the unfinished Sudoku onto the desk, that was one puzzle I wouldn’t crack, and peeled myself off the leather seat. The effort made me sweat. Summer in the city you had to love it !

The tyres squealed in protest on the sticky blacktop as I stuck the old Ford in drive and cruised uptown. The streets were empty, nobody but a fool PI would be out in heat like this, so I chewed a little on what the night ahead might bring, maybe I’d see the dame, the redhead in that red dress. I checked the glove box for my 45, Dancing Queen by Abba, a little scratched but still servicable, it would do if things got lively.

I swung the car into the lot. A big beemer squatted out front. The engine smelt hot, somebody had gunned this Bavarian beast without mercy. They had to be plumb crazy or desperately short of time, or maybe a little of both. I set my hat brim low and wrestled my way into the joint.

It struck me hard. Something was wrong. My nose itched. I looked around, once, quickly. I took it all in. You could cut the hopelessness with a knife, the sort of knife you’d give a kindergarten kid. There’d been a happening here, that much was obvious, but now it was quiet…too quiet, the lull before the storm you might say. I tapped my jacket for my hip flask and took a swig. The nip felt good, comforting. I was ready now…

So anyway the gist is it’s film shoot night for ‘Power Corrupts’, one of the club entries for the annual North V South competition. David has brought together all the ingredients for a really great production and all he needs now is a bit of luck, a following wind and enough ‘support artists’ to make up a decent crowd scene. We wait and wait, the tension is like a coiled spring that’s close to breaking. But one by one they trickle in and gradually they gather, the friends the neighbours and the club stalwarts. We have our crowd!

With crowd, crew and our leading ladies all assembled the shoot begins. David takes masterful control of the situation and with him in the director’s stool the filming ticks along with assured efficiency until ALL the scenes are in the can and the ambitious schedule completed.

To the cast and crew I take my hat off to you all. In fact I take off everything that decency will allow to salute your patience, fortitude, good grace and good humour especially in the teeth of what was a long and very muggy night. Well done and lets kick the North’s bottom!

New OVFM Project – “OVFM Advert II”

New OVFM Project

OVFM Advert II

Back in 2010 we ran a project evening where we asked you to, the loyal and productive members of OVFM, to make an advert to promote OVFM and hopefully encourage new member to join the club.

Well, with plans for the club for open out very own YouTube channel very close to coming to fruition (watch this space) we are once again giving you the opportunity to get your creative caps on and make another advert for the club. It can be comedic, dramatic, esoteric or a straight up infomercial – just as long as it gets the message across of what we do in OVFM and what we can offer prospective film makers.

You can see a previous entry from Mike Shaw here:

The deadline is the club meeting on August 6th so you’d better get started!

Good luck!

OVFM Club Meeting Tuesday June 25th 2013

So, why is this a “Special” Project Evening? Because I couldn’t think of how else to categorise what we have in store for this week!!

The architect of this unique event called “Consequences” is our youngest club member and Vice Chairman Sam “Choo-Choo” Brown and you know the kids of today with their Red Bull and Hippity Hoppity music, so what goes on in his mind could be quite frightening as we are sure to find out.

The idea is thus: we are (hopefully) going to make a film (a new experience for some of you I believe) but what it is about is a mystery and that is the point of this project – to see if we can create a film on the fly. The club members will be split into small groups and Sam will give them each an opening a closing line for their scene. The groups will have a few minutes to brainstorm an idea in which to incorporate these lines then the camera will be passed to them and they will shoot their scene.

Will the end product have any coherence at all? Will the story flow? The only way to find out is to show up on Tuesday evening and join in the maybe… er fun!
